I love goats. Especially baby goats. Who doesn't? They’re smart and funny. They’ll jump on to anything. And my neighbor's goat Daisy just had two adorable dwarf pygmy baby goats.

With all the horses, dogs, goats, chickens, cats, donkeys and llamas in our neighborhood, we’re all using a lot of diatomaceous earth. Why? Here are the top reasons why diatomaceous earth is great for the farm or ranch.

Diatomaceous Earth insecticide, a bad year for bugs and National Help a Horse Day

brit1.jpgHappy bug free National Help a Horse Day!

From all the reports we’re seeing lately, this is another bad year for bugs. In the West, they say we will have more bugs because it was a fairly dry winter. In the East, they say we will have more bugs because it was a longer, wetter winter. Whatever. All I know is that I’m seeing an early bunch of ants, spiders, earwigs and flies at my house, and I hate bugs.

Unfortunately, I picked a hobby that is intrinsically associated with bugs. Horses! (fyi, that would be my 25-year-old retired dressage horse Brit in the photo.) This year I’m starting my bug killer mission early with my secret weapon – diatomaceous earth insecticide (DE). The DE insecticide is made from microscopic skeletons of prehistoric algae – diatoms - that simply dry out and slice up insects like a samurai swordsman!

Flynn the Bichon Frise wins Westminster. Think he uses DE for fleas?

A cute little cotton ball won the Best in Show award at the 142nd Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show yesterday. Flynn, the little white powder puff pup, also known as aka GCHP CH Belle Creek's All I Care About Is Love, was picked over six other champs including a popular pug named Biggie and Ty the giant schnauzer. We also had a Carson City, NV canine celebrity do well this year. Adele, a Spinone Italiano owned by Carson City Deputy Director of Emergency Management Stacey Belt, won best dog out of 12 in her breed. Yay Adele!

Now that Flynn the puff ball is a celebrity, he has a busy schedule. Today includes visits to the morning TV news shows, a steak lunch at Sardi's, a trip to the top of the Empire State Building, and he's been invited for a walk-on part at a Broadway hit "Kinky Boots." I tell you. The life of a dog. Flynn's next plan is to retire, so he can just be a dog. He loves belly rubs and rolling in the snow. He's probably allowed to jump on the bed. My guess is he doesn’t have fleas. But if he did, I’m sure his owner would want an organic insecticide that's really effective on fleas. Hey, we have a product like that!

Dateline: Gobbler's Knob, PA. Everyone's holding their breath to see what the world's most famous groundhog predicts. Will he see his shadow? Will we really have six more weeks of winter? It's been a pretty crazy year for weather everywhere, so you just don't know. What do you think Phil is hoping for? Alfalfa and berries are his favorite foods. And we've heard that he's looking for more diatomaceous earth (DE) to help control fleas. Lots of nasty bugs in those burrows. Phil's looking for an organic DE insecticide that kills fleas. Hey, we have a product like that!
