Nevada teachers learn about 10-million-year-old diatomaceous earth fossils

For years, EP Minerals, a U.S. Silica company, has hosted the annual Nevada Mining Association's teachers workshop, touring our Clark plant and mine. This past year, 55 Northern Nevada teachers got the incredible experience of touring our plant, a historical lecture on diatomaceous earth (DE), and a mine tour, where they got to take as many DE rocks as they could carry with them to share with their students. It's always a fun group and the teachers are genuinely excited about taking what they learn back to their classes.

Most people know of diatomaceous earth because they use it to filter their swimming pools or for its natural insecticide properties to control insects in their homes or gardens. Biologists know about diatoms, the single-celled plants that form diatomaceous earth, because they are truly the lungs of the earth, in that they produce about ¾ of the world’s new oxygen supply. Materials scientists know about diatom skeletons (called frustules), the tiny, intricate porous opal structures, because they are known to be the strongest naturally-occurring substances.

On August 31, we celebrate National Diatomaceous Earth Day to recognize the diatom and the remarkable substance it creates, diatomaceous earth.

Got beer? Or wine, tequila, bourbon, whiskey, rum, vodka or soda? How ‘bout wings? For most Americans that enjoy the Super Bowl, the season’s biggest game is much more than just a sports event. In many ways, Super Bowl Sunday has become a truly American holiday. And like with most holidays, food and drinks both play an important role in our national celebration. With millions of viewers expected to watch Super Bowl LIII, many will gather with friends and family to watch the Patriots and Rams, and that means they’re be digging in to a host of traditional game day favorites like pizza, Buffalo wings, beer, wine, and other spirits. None of it would be on the Tom Brady diet, that’s for sure.

First of all, let's set the record straight. Good thing all that beer, wine, soda, and spirits are filtered with diatomaceous earth (DE) filter aid. Those beverages certainly wouldn’t be the same without DE.

It’s an incredible effort to make saké, the national drink of Japan. As you may know, it’s made from rice. Most people think it’s like wine, but the process to make it is very similar to brewing beer, where the rice starch is converted to alcohol, But the saké is fermented using Koji, which is mold. Mold? Really?
