Happy Make A Dog's Day! Here at EP Minerals, a U.S. Silica company, we are big animal lovers, and many of us own dogs, (but also cats, horses and a myriad of other pets,) and consider them part of the family. We’re sure you probably do, too! And we want to keep them as happy and healthy as possible. That means keeping them bug-free.

Diatomaceous earth, also known as DE, is a sedimentary rock found in large deposits worldwide and mined primarily in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Peru, France, Spain, Denmark, and China. Northern Nevada has several large, high-purity deposits mined by EP Minerals, a U.S. Silica company. The DE is developed into hundreds of products used around the globe by the world's largest companies.

The diatoms that are forming today - the single-celled plants that make up the diatomaceous earth - are truly the lungs of the earth, in that they produce about three quarters of the world’s new oxygen supply. See, DE is a really big deal!

National Diatomaceous Earth Day is August 31!

Most people know of diatomaceous earth because they use it to filter their swimming pools or for its natural insecticide properties to control insects in their homes or gardens. Biologists know about diatoms, the single-celled plants that form diatomaceous earth, because they are truly the lungs of the earth, in that they produce about ¾ of the world’s new oxygen supply. Materials scientists know about diatom skeletons (called frustules), the tiny, intricate porous opal structures, because they are known to be the strongest naturally-occurring substances.

On August 31, we celebrate National Diatomaceous Earth Day to recognize the diatom and the remarkable substance it creates, diatomaceous earth.

National Fossil Day! Learn about 10 Million Year-Old Fossils in Diatomaceous Earth

It's National Fossil Day and what better way to celebrate than to learn about the amazing fossils found at one of EP Minerals' diatomaceous earth (DE) mines. 10-20 million years ago, Northern Nevada was covered by a freshwater lake that was full of stickleback fish - small spiny-rayed fish that lived during the Miocene Epoch.

Recently, EP Minerals hosted a group of 40 Nevada teachers at our diatomaceous earth mine quarry to fossil hunt as part of the Nevada Mining Association's Teacher Education program. The program is designed to encourage teachers to incorporate more mining education, geology and Nevada mineral history into their classrooms. Here's a look at the teacher's group at the DE mine and some of their "treasure"-- 10 million year old stickleback fish fossils.

Diatomaceous Earth insecticide, a bad year for bugs and National Help a Horse Day

brit1.jpgHappy bug free National Help a Horse Day!

From all the reports we’re seeing lately, this is another bad year for bugs. In the West, they say we will have more bugs because it was a fairly dry winter. In the East, they say we will have more bugs because it was a longer, wetter winter. Whatever. All I know is that I’m seeing an early bunch of ants, spiders, earwigs and flies at my house, and I hate bugs.

Unfortunately, I picked a hobby that is intrinsically associated with bugs. Horses! (fyi, that would be my 25-year-old retired dressage horse Brit in the photo.) This year I’m starting my bug killer mission early with my secret weapon – diatomaceous earth insecticide (DE). The DE insecticide is made from microscopic skeletons of prehistoric algae – diatoms - that simply dry out and slice up insects like a samurai swordsman!
