Most people know of diatomaceous earth because they use it to filter their swimming pools or for its natural insecticide properties to control insects in their homes or gardens. Biologists know about diatoms, the single-celled plants that form diatomaceous earth, because they are truly the lungs of the earth, in that they produce about ¾ of the world’s new oxygen supply. Materials scientists know about diatom skeletons (called frustules), the tiny, intricate porous opal structures, because they are known to be the strongest naturally-occurring substances.

On August 31, we celebrate National Diatomaceous Earth Day to recognize the diatom and the remarkable substance it creates, diatomaceous earth.

Where did you go on your summer vacation? Maybe the beach, the mountains, a road trip? For the past four years, Claudia Westphal, EP Minerals’ sales and export coordinator in Munster, Germany, has done something a little more noble on her vacations. She travels to Turkey to work at HayDos Hayvan Dostlari Dernegi (HayDos Animal Friends Association). “I got in contact with Haydos during my holidays in the Turkish Aegean Sea area years ago. I donated some money for it and then started donating my time,” said Westphal.

Millions of years in the making: National Diatomaceous Earth Day-August 31

Diatomaceous earth, also known as DE, is a sedimentary rock found in large deposits worldwide and mined primarily in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Peru, France, Spain, Denmark, and China. While still being formed today, some of the deposits of diatomaceous earth were formed millions of years ago. Diatomaceous earth deposits are formed as diatoms, die, and fall to the bottom of bodies of water. Over time, the organic portions of the diatoms are weathered away, and the remaining opal frustules form diatomaceous earth.

The diatoms that are forming today - the single-celled plants that make up the diatomaceous earth - are truly the lungs of the earth, in that they produce about three quarters of the world’s new oxygen supply. See, DE is a really big deal!

EP Minerals' Global Technical Services Director Larry Galberd and his Blue Bayou race team use EP Minerals' Floor-Dry Oil Absorbent to clean up fuel spills at the racetrack

It's time to check in on our resident racecar driver, Larry Galberd! EP Minerals' Floor-Dry, the #1 oil absorbent and spill clean up for the racetrack, is one of Larry's sponsors.

If you'll recall from a previous blog post, EP Minerals’ Global Technical Services Director Larry Galberd leads a double life. By day, Larry could be anywhere in the world helping our diatomaceous earth or perlite filtration customers optimize their filtration processes and solve problems. By night and on weekends (and any other chance he gets) Larry is driving hell bent for leather at 140 mph for his Blue Bayou race car team in the ChumpCar Racing Series. Larry and his team are “sponsored” (I use that term loosely) by EP Minerals’ Floor-Dry absorbent, the #1 automobile oil spill cleanup product that can be found at all the major auto supply stores today.

Go Larry! And keep promoting Floor-Dry, the #1 oil absorbent at the racetrack!

Every week, we celebrate one of our 25 EP Way Fundamentals. This week it's Fundamental #4: Make the customer your primary agenda. We maybe should have made that #1, since that's how important this fundamental is to us. To a person, we have a passion for putting the customer first. Every day.

We're different in how we treat our customers, different in how we work with each other, and different in what we do and how we do it. Apparently, our customers think we’re different, too. But in a very good way.

Next week, EP Minerals is hosting the annual Nevada Mining Association's teachers workshop, touring our Clark plant and mine. This year, 55 Northern Nevada teachers will get the incredible experience of touring our plant, a historical lecture on diatomaceous earth (DE), and a mine tour, where they can take as many DE rocks as they can carry with them to share with their students. It's always a fun group and the teachers are genuinely excited about taking what they learn back to their classes.
