Sonoma Composting (http://www.sonomacompost.com) is conducting a half day workshop at Clos du Bois Winery (www.closdubois.com) to discuss composting in the vineyard, including a segment on using diatomaceous earth (DE) spent cake in vineyard composting blends. Sonoma Composting will cover the composting process and monitoring, the use of compost and its role in soil building and carbon sequestration.

10-20 million years ago, Hazen, Nevada, was covered by a lake that was full of stickleback fish - small spiny-rayed fish that lived during the Miocene Epoch. Recently, EP Minerals hosted a group of 40 Nevada teachers at our Hazen diatomaceous earth mine quarry to fossil hunt as part of the Nevada Mining Association's Teacher Education program. The program is designed to encourage teachers to incorporate more mining education, geology and Nevada mineral history into their classrooms. Here's a look at the teacher's group at the mine and some of their 10 million year old stickleback fish fossils.

At the American Coatings Show (ACS) in Atlanta recently, the EP Minerals functional additives team met with a wide variety of paint and coatings customers and distributors to talk about new developments in the field, and to understand their biggest challenges today. Everyday I hear about a new use for diatomaceous earth. It's in everything! And still, not very many people have heard about DE or know what a "diatom" is. Here's a special guest blog by Esther Inglis-Arkell from io9.com that gets into DE, diatoms and how important this mineral today. (Note: Ms. Inglis-Arkell does refer to a diatom as an animal, when in fact it is a microscopic unicellular plant.)

Meow! That's a lot of kitty litter! EP Minerals recently donated $82,000 of kitty litter to the SPCA of Northern Nevada (SPCA). The SPCA received 57 pallets of cat litter worth from EP Minerals' Fernley plant.

EP Minerals perlite plant in Blair, NE
Blair, Nebraska. Population: About 8,000. Close to Omaha, the Iowa border, the Missouri river and lots and lots of corn. Why did we open a new plant there?
