My dog Harper, listening intently as I tell him about National Mutt Day and diatomaceous earth for dogs

It's National Mutt Day! Also known as National Mixed Breed Dog Day. And you know how we love our pets here at EP Minerals, so we like this day. National Mutt Day is all about embracing, saving and celebrating mixed breed dogs. The National Mutt day folks claim that mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier, better behaved, they live longer and are just as able to perform the duties of pure bred dogs - such as bomb and drug sniffing, search and rescue and guiding the blind. So, what does National Mutt Day have to do with diatomaceous earth?

Well, we have this incredible, diatomaceous earth OMRI listed (organic) insecticide, DEsect, that works well to control fleas, ticks and other insects that might pose a problem for your dog or cat. Case in point, one of our employees moved here from Pennsylvania. She had read one of my earlier blog posts on diatomaceous earth (DE) use at the barn and asked me about DE for dogs. Her really good friend in Pennsylvania has a pointer that loves to run the woods but comes back covered with ticks. Her friend has little kids, so they don’t want to put a flea collar on the dog. They wanted an organic pest control solution that works. I said we have a product like that! I told her all about DEsect, our organic insecticide product.

She shipped some back east to her friend and the dog, Boone, is doing well and the ticks are staying away. I recently ran across an article on DE for dogs in Dogs Naturally Magazine, that talks more about diatomaceous earth for dogs, so I thought I’d include it here:

The Benefits Of Diatomaceous Earth For Dogs
Diatomaceous Earth is an easy way to control insects on your dog. It's a non-toxic, natural substance made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. Crushed to a fine powder and observed through a microscope, the particles resemble bits of broken glass. Diatomaceous Earth is deadly to any insect, yet completely harmless to animals.

Diatomaceous Earth’s mode of action for insect and parasite control is strictly mechanical. The microscopically sharp edges contact the insect or parasite and pierce their protective coating, so they soon dehydrate and die. The larvae is affected in the same way. Diatomaceous Earth is very effective in the control of fleas, ticks, flies and other insects. This is achieved by dusting your dog with Diatomaceous Earth, along with his bedding area and surrounding carpeted areas.

There’s another blog post that will give you more information on using DE for pets. Read it here: http://blog.epminerals.com/using-natural-diatomaceous-earth-de-for-flea-tick-control-in-pets

For large industrial orders of DEsect, please contact us here at EP Minerals. For small home size DEsect packages, please contact Pro-Terra, our online sales partner at www.pro-terra.com.

And, Happy National Mutt Day! Maybe visit your local animal shelter and adopt a new mutt friend - or make a donation. At EP Minerals, we love our cats, too. Through our community giving program, EP Gives Back, EP Minerals' donated $82,000 worth of kitty litter to our local SPCA. Now that's a lot of kitty litter!
